*************** He was never known as the "perfect child." Mum couldn't have babies so Papa thought they should adopt. Mum agreed but she was hesitant. Papa went out fishing one day for a child. He went down to the most vast and beautiful sea, down past their house where most of the little orphans played. Once in his ship, he caught site of a storm approaching quickly to the island. "Sweet red velvet Jesus, would you look at that!" Deep within the darkened sea emerged a giant tentacle, clambering its way down just missing Papa's ship. It smacked the water, giving birth to a horrendous wave that threw Papa off the boat. "Ooohhh...!" Just before he hit the perilous claws of the waters, two more identical tentacles arose from beneath and clasped around him tightly. Papa squeaked and yelped for the musky storm air as he shuffled his glasses to get a look at his savior - or possible enemy. What he saw was not comprehensible in the state he was in. His mind couldn't take in the details of the creature. All he knew was that the animal was bringing him safely to shore. Once on land, he rested. The octopus-like creature sat on the shoreline, watching Papa regain his energy. The storm calmed and the waves lightened to a sparkling blue. Papa awoke moments later to find that it wasn't all a dream. He stared at the octopus. It was tremendously large and scaled with inscriptions of what looked like words and newspaper clippings. It appeared to him that the creature was made out of paper and ink tissues. It didn't seem possible. "Why, hello..." Papa began. The octopus rose slightly, a way of letting him know he listens. Papa couldn't just leave this beauty here, dwelling in the most insidious of all seas. He had promised mum a child, afterall. He tugged the octopus down to Mum's house. Her expression couldn't have been more priceless. "Oh, Papa....Oh Papa this isn't what I had in mind!" "But Mum, he saved me from the storms! He listens, he learns! We've got to give him a home." Mum of course, was hesitant. She sighed and ran inside. A few seconds later, she appeared again but this time with a glass of milk. "Now, come here Mr. Octopus...have some nice cold milk." Papa grinned and sat on his chair, welcoming their new child to their home. Mum warmed up to their tentacled son, and they both decided on a name. "The Good Cat," Mum said proudly. Papa didn't question the name. Mum explained. "Cats are loyal, cats are kind. Cats like milk too. I've always wanted a baby, and I've always wanted a cat. He's got stories written all over him. He's wise, just like a cat." And so that, was that. *************** |
